International Day of Women and Girls in Science

11 February is International Day of Women and Girls in Science!

There are many incredible women and girls around the world who are making a significant contribution in science. We honour and celebrate you and your contribution to humanity.

In the last 15 years, there has been a huge effort to encourage and involve women and girls in science. However, these efforts have not been enough to address the marginalization of women and girls from participating fully in science. The data says it all! The UN report that “less than 30% of researchers worldwide are women”. UNESCO also report that approximately 30% of all female students select the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) field in higher education. These staggering statistics can be attributed to age-old gender biases and stereotypes that are pushing women and girls away from science related fields.

How do we justify these statistics when women and girls make up almost 50% of the global population? In addition, women in STEM continue to make a significant contribution that we benefit from in our day to day lives. For example, the COVID-19 pandemic has shown that women scientists have played a crucial role in fighting against the virus that affects each one of us.

I believe that we can do better to change the status quo for women and girls in science! The 2021 theme for International Women’s Day  is #choosetochallenge. I invite you to play your part in challenging gender bias and inequity, in order to achieve gender balance in the STEM field. What can you do to forge a gender equal world for women and girls?
